Male Breast Reduction or Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia - Treatment of Enlarged Male Breasts

Although rarely discussed, enlarged male breasts affect an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. Gynecomastia may affect one or both breasts and can be a great source of shame. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no confirmed cause in the vast majority of cases.

Gynecomastia is an effective option for men who desire a more masculine chest. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.

At Boston Plastic Surgery, our Vaser Lipo system can more effectively remove fat from this problem area, resulting in superior outcomes.

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia.

This 22 year-old man, involved in fitness and bodybuilding, noted onset of enlarged, tender breast tissue after using over-the-counter "Pro-Hormones." The condition did not resolve after stopping use of the product, and surgery was needed to remove the excess glandular tissue.

Procedure: Direct excision of glandular tissue through a peri-areolar incision. Vaser-assisted liposuction to assist with contouring. Post-op photos taken at 2 months.

This 26 year-old man suffered with asymmetric gynecomastia, affecting mostly his left side, since the age of 12. He elected to have only the more severely affected side corrected. In his case, it was decided to address the glandular tissue and the fatty tissue initially, and to allow the excess skin to retract on its own, with a plan to address any residual skin laxity, if needed, at a later stage.

This more conservative approach is associated with fewer risks, when compared to a combination procedure that addresses all of the components at once. It can pay off nicely when the skin retracts well, as it did in this case, and a secondary procedure can be avoided.

Procedure: Vaser-assisted liposuction. Direct excision of glandular tissue through a peri-areolar incision. Post-op photos taken at 3 months (scars reach their peak of "pinkness" at 3 months).
