Boston NeoGraft® Hair Transplant System

Did you know that by the age of 50, 85% of men will experience significant hair thinning? What about the fact that women make up almost half of the hair loss sufferers in America? Hereditary hair loss affects around 80 million men and women in the United States, and it can greatly impact self-confidence.

If you’re concerned with a receding hairline or expanding bald patch, we can help. Here at Boston Plastic Surgery, we’re thrilled to offer patients a game-changing hair transplant technology: the NeoGraft automated follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant system. It’s the first minimally invasive procedure of its kind, and it can help restore natural-looking hair with a gentle procedure and minimal downtime—without a large linear scar.

The NeoGraft Difference

What makes the NeoGraft system unique is that it automates the hair transplantation process. This no-touch technology uses pneumatic controls to carefully extract individual follicular units from a donor area, typically on the backside of your head where your hair is likely fullest. Every single graft is precisely extracted with similar length and diameter to increase the likelihood that it will survive and produce hair.

After the extraction process, the follicular units are separated by size and transplanted into the previously determined areas of your scalp. The grafts are implanted individually and with great care to ensure that the result is natural. The process involves little-to-no discomfort, no scalpel incision, and no staples, making it the least invasive hair transplantation procedure.

NeoGraft vs. Other Hair Transplant Options: Not All FUEs Are Created Equal

Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of the NeoGraft system is that it does not result in a linear scar. Other hair transplantation procedures (known as FUT) require a strip of scalp tissue harvested from the back of the head, which involves a long incision, staples, and, of course, the resulting scarring. Because the NeoGraft technology harvests individual hair follicles, no incisions are required.

Additionally, the automation of the Boston NeoGraft hair transplant system provides some distinct advantages over other FUE techniques. When hair follicles are extracted manually, or even by a “robot”, there is a higher risk of damage to the follicles. The process is very lengthy and tedious, and it leaves a lot of room for error. By comparison, NeoGraft gently and meticulously removes and transplants hair follicles quickly, accurately, and with very little trauma to the follicle.

Can I Benefit from the NeoGraft Procedure?

The NeoGraft system is a great option for both men and women who are concerned with hair loss and are interested in a minimally invasive solution that offers natural-looking and feeling results. Typically, great candidates for the procedure meet the following criteria:

  • Would like to restore a natural-looking fullness to thinning or bald areas on the scalp
  • Want to be able to wear their hair long or short after hair transplantation
  • Have sufficient donor hair at the back of the head
  • Understand what can reasonably be expected from the procedure

The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for NeoGraft is to speak with a board certified plastic surgeon. During your individual consultation, you will receive all of the information that you need to know if you are a good candidate for the procedure, how your restoration would be planned, and what results to expect.

Your NeoGraft Consultation at Boston Plastic Surgery

During your initial consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Samaha, he will evaluate your hair loss, listen to your concerns and goals, and work with you to develop a treatment plan. You will also learn about non-invasive treatments that can help you keep more of the hair you have, or even grow back some of the hair that was lost. These treatments can also improve the yield of the procedure, reduce post-procedure shedding, and stabilize the newly grafted follicles.

What to Expect During Your NeoGraft Procedure

Prior to your procedure, we will map out the recipient sites with an eye for pleasing and natural-looking placement, paying particular attention to the orientation, angle, and direction of the follicles. Both the donor and recipient sites will be numbed with a local anesthetic. A mild oral sedative is sometimes prescribed to help you stay relaxed. Deeper sedation is also available to some patients under certain circumstances, but it is generally not necessary. Your surgeon and our team of expert nurses and technicians will begin by meticulously harvesting hair follicles from your donor site using NeoGraft’s automated technology. After the appropriate amount of follicular units have been gently extracted, they are individually transplanted to the mapped out areas, as determined during your consultation and pre-procedure planning.

After the procedure, most of our patients are able to resume their normal daily activities fairly quickly. Most return to work in as little as 1 to 2 weeks. Because NeoGraft does not require the incision and staples of other surgical hair restoration methods, you will experience minimal downtime and little-to-no discomfort in the days after treatment.

When You’ll See Results

The final step in your hair transplantation journey with NeoGraft is patience. Hair transplantation is such a successful and natural-looking hair restoration option because it uses your hair follicles—which means you should anticipate seeing your results appear gradually. Follicles are living tissues that grow in a cycle, so you’ll see new growth emerging over the course of a few months.

Within two to three weeks of your procedure, your grafted hair will shed so new growth can occur. You should begin seeing this new growth by around the three month mark, with your results gradually improving over time. Once the hair has come in and you note a fuller, healthier head of hair,  you can cut, dye, and style it as you normally would.

While the transplanted hair will continue to grow, it’s important to remember that hair loss will not cease after transplantation. Over time, you may notice new areas of thinning or the beginnings of different bald spots. With this in mind, understand that you may require ongoing maintenance or additional NeoGraft treatments as time goes by.
