Breast reduction surgery can give women smaller, lighter and firmer breasts that are better proportioned to the body and easier to support. The procedure can be life changing for many women who experience problems such as the following:
- Discomfort from exceptionally large breasts
- Body pain in the neck, back, and shoulders
- Skin irritation from pressure on the bra strap
- Skin irritation in the breast crease
- Breast asymmetry, i.e. different shaped breasts
- Negative body image due to abnormally large breasts
Breast reduction can address these issues to alleviate the physical and emotional stress associated with abnormally large breast size.
A new shape and contour of the breast is created by removing excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin, and by moving the nipple and areola into their new positions. The areola and nipple can also be reshaped or reduced in size.
Breast reduction is usually performed under general anesthesia.
Breast reduction incisions
Incision designs include: a vertical design that results in a vertical line from the areola to the breast fold (“lollipop” scar); a traditional inverted-T (“anchor”) design; or a special design that results in a curvilinear scar at the breast crease, with no vertical line. During your consultation, Dr. Samaha will help determine which technique would result in the best healing and the best shape, depending on tissue characteristics and measurements.
After Breast Reduction
Patients often report feeling more normal after undergoing breast reduction. Physical activity may become easier and self-consciousness related to the breasts can be greatly reduced. Immediately after surgery, it takes some time for discomfort to subside. Most patients return to their normal routine after about 1-2 weeks. Exercise or other rigorous activities should be avoided for about 6 weeks.
