Fitness Guru Opens Up About Thinning Hair

Posted on August 29, 2017 | by

When most people think of thinning hair, they picture a middle-aged man experiencing the natural process of getting older. But hair loss can affect both men and women—and it can happen even at a younger age. Such was the case for 26-year-old Kayla Itsines, a female fitness star whose struggle with pattern baldness and journey to self-acceptance was recently featured on Today.com.

Even young women can experience hair loss

Health and fitness guru Kayla Itsines of “Sweat with Kayla” is no stranger to accepting her flaws. Part of the reason she has such a loyal following is her openness about everyday life struggles, including her stretch marks, guilty food pleasures, and, now, her battle with female pattern baldness.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, 40% of hair loss sufferers in America are women. It can be caused by hormonal imbalances, extreme stress or trauma, and your genetic predisposition to hair loss, as is the case for Itsines, her mother, and her grandmother before her.

She opened up to her Instagram followers with this post:

I have had a lot of you girls ask me about my hair!! So here is a fact that I haven’t actually ever really spoken about. My natural hair is actually super short. I have genetically really thin hair (my grandma and mum both have really thin hair as does a lot of my family) I often just wear a clip in pony tail when I want long hair. It is something I have come to terms with over the years. I have a family history of female pattern baldness. 😁 Most days, as you would see, I leave my hair in a messy bun with a hair tie and I do nothing with it 😝👵🏼 I know we all have our own little insecurities, and one of mine has always been my hair, but it is just me! I can see my hair getting thinner and thinner the older I get. Yes, of course I’m super conscious about it and Ive tried everything to fix it, trust me. But, at the same time, I am at peace with it and I will not let it rule my life. So instead I focus on being healthy and happy. This is definitely a really difficult thing to do and I know from first hand experience, but it is definitely worth it and you have NOTHING to be shy about, be PROUD. I am sure all of you girls know what I am saying, so lets talk about it. Have you ever experienced anything like this? 💜💛www.kaylaitsines.com/app

There’s no shame in thinning hair…or wanting to make a change

We commend Kayla Itsines and her positive outlook on life and self-acceptance; we love seeing famous faces being open with the public about their experiences. For Itsines, her personal success was the ability to be okay with her hair loss—but that may not be something everyone is comfortable with. At the end of the day, it’s important that you do what makes you happy.

That’s why we’re pleased to offer NeoGraft® to our patients, both men and women, who feel self-conscious and uncomfortable with their hair loss. It is the first minimally invasive procedure of its kind, and our patients love that it restores a natural-looking head of hair with minimal downtime and no visible scarring.
