Your Genes Aren’t the Only Thing to Blame for Aging…
Posted on June 7, 2016 | by Boston Plastic SurgeryLast month, we talked about how you can thank your mom for the way you age. However, your parents aren’t the only one’s to blame for wrinkles—there are other surprising things that can take a toll on your youthful good looks.
Stylecaster recently highlighted some habits many of us are guilty of; you may be surprised to learn what everyday items and practices are prematurely aging your skin.
Is your work environment making you look old?
You know those awful fluorescent lights that plague most offices? They could be aging your skin by the minute. According to studies conducted by the Miami Skin Institute, regularly sitting under fluorescent lighting amounts to a lot of radiation over the years.
Tip: Wear sunscreen at all times, regardless if you’re inside or outdoors.
Aging can happen while you’re sleeping
Did you know that your pillow could be contributing to premature aging while you’re sleeping? It’s true! The type of pillow you use, the material of your pillowcase, and the positions you sleep in can all contribute to signs of aging. In fact, many people have deeper wrinkles on the side of their face they sleep on most.
Tip: Purchase a silk pillowcase or a well-shaped pillow which will lessen sleeping creases.
Are your beauty habits to blame?
The skin around your eyes is one of the most delicate areas of the human body—and this area is quite susceptible to visible signs of aging. Wrinkles and fine lines can easily be exacerbated by years of wearing heavy eye makeup and rough cleansing practices.
Tip: Avoid using harsh soaps or makeup removers to wash off eye makeup—your aesthetician can recommend a safe, gentle and effective option to gently wipe away mascara or eyeliner from the delicate skin around the eyes. Environ pre-cleansing oil and Glo Therapeutics cleansing oil are a couple of our favorites; both are available at our Skin Wellness Center.
