What can eyelid surgery do for you?
Eyelid lift surgery is designed to help rejuvenate and brighten tired or heavy-appearing eyes by removing excess skin around the lower eyelids, as well as correct drooping upper lids. This procedure also addresses puffiness and “bags” by including fat contouring or fat removal around the eyes.
An eyelid lift can improve your appearance and sense of well-being in a number of respects:
- You’ll look more vibrant and better refreshed, even without makeup
- Others will no longer perceive you as tired or lacking energy because of your eyes
- You may even notice your vision improve if sagging skin has obstructed your ability to see
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery, also known as upper blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed for rejuvenating the appearance of the upper eyelids. It involves the removal of excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look.
During an upper eyelid lift, a qualified plastic surgeon will carefully make incisions along the natural crease of your upper eyelid, thus allowing for discreet scarring. Your surgeon will then remove the excess tissue, tighten the remaining skin, and skillfully close the incisions.
This procedure can address concerns such as drooping eyelids, puffiness, and sagging skin, all of which can make you appear older or perpetually fatigued. The benefits of upper eyelid surgery include a more alert and rested appearance, improved vision by eliminating obstruction caused by excess skin, enhanced eye symmetry, and increased self-confidence.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery, also known as lower blepharoplasty, addresses under-eye bags, puffiness, and wrinkles, which can contribute to a tired and aged appearance. During this procedure, your plastic surgeon will carefully make incisions either inside the lower eyelid (known as the transconjunctival approach) or just below the lash line (the subciliary approach). Through these incisions, excess fat, skin, and muscle tissue are carefully removed or repositioned to create a smoother and more youthful contour. Depending on the extent of your procedure, your surgeon may also tighten the skin and underlying tissues to achieve optimal results.
The benefits of lower eyelid surgery include a reduction in under-eye bags and puffiness and diminished appearance of wrinkles and fine lines for a more refreshed and rejuvenated look, and improved self-confidence.
Combining Upper & Lower Eyelid Rejuvenation
Some patients find that they need both upper and lower blepharoplasty to achieve their desired results. These can be performed at the same time. During your personal consultation with Dr. Samaha or Dr. Phelan, we will examine your personal anatomy to determine whether upper, lower, both, or perhaps another facial rejuvenation procedure – such as a forehead lift (brow lift) or facelift will be more effective for obtaining your desired outcome.

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Many surgical procedures are performed in our outpatient surgery suite, which is accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (also known as AAAASF or Quad A), under the care of a board-certified anesthesiologist.
Eyelid surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. In select cases, limited procedures can be performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation.
Upper eyelid incisions are usually designed to blend into the eyelid crease and along the natural lid skin lines.
If you struggle with lower eyelid pockets of fat, those can be approached with an incision just inside your lower eyelid or with an incision along the lash line where it will be essentially invisible. Any skin resection would require a lash line incision.
Bulging fat pads are addressed through the selected incisions to remove or relocate the fat.
Ensuring a smooth recovery after blepharoplasty surgery
When you leave our practice following your eyelid surgery, you will need a ride home and help around the house for a couple of days. You may experience some discomfort, which would be managed with our postoperative pain management protocol. Postoperative pain after eyelid surgery is typically mild to moderate, and most patients are able to avoid opioid pain medications.
You will need to limit your activity for several days and take care when touching your eye area. Dry eye symptoms can be worse in the weeks after surgery, and may require more attention to keep your eyes feeling comfortable. If you are followed by an eye doctor for dry eye syndrome, you will want to ask for advice from your eye doctor on how to optimize your dry eye management during this time. If you normally wear contacts, you can expect to not wear them for a few weeks. As you heal, any swelling will dissipate and you will visit our office for a check-up. Read our eye surgery post-operative instructions to learn more about the recovery process. When you have completed aftercare, your eyes should appear younger, with reduced sagging and bags of fat.
Long-lasting, natural eyelid rejuvenation results
After undergoing upper and lower eyelid surgery, patients can expect noticeable improvements in the appearance of their eyes and the surrounding areas. The results typically include a more youthful and refreshed look, with reduced drooping or sagging of the eyelids, diminished under-eye bags and puffiness, and a smoother, overall more rejuvenated appearance.
Please keep in mind that while the results of eyelid surgery can be long-lasting, they are not entirely permanent. Your natural aging process will continue over time, and factors such as genetics, lifestyle choices, and sun exposure can affect the longevity of your results. However, the benefits of eyelid surgery can be enjoyed for many years, and the procedure can safely and quite effectively turn back the clock on the signs of aging.
Complementary treatment options to enhance your new look
Blepharoplasty can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgeries such as a facelift, buccal fat removal, facial fat transfer, or a brow lift. Many patients choose to combine these surgeries to address signs of aging in the upper and lower face with only one recovery. Some patients also include earlobe repair if needed. Non-surgical treatments, such as Botox or dermal filler injections, can also help to smooth wrinkles around the eyes, nose or mouth, providing a more youthful appearance and facial harmony across your features.
